M&Y POTTERY

Made by people for people

Misha & Yvona are potters based in Mosman and Manly, Sydney who produce natural organic hand built and thrown ceramics tableware. Each piece is individually crafted and unique. They are drawn from colours and textures of nature, simplicity and function.

Ceramics is one of the oldest technology we have and our whole evolution is connected to it. Pottery has re-emerged with a new and important role to play in our society. It enriches everyday objects with purpose and beauty; it gives them a soul. When an object is made by hand-by an artisan-you won’t want to throw it away. You will care for it and cherish it.

We wish that with our tableware you will enjoy your daily rituals just a little bit more.

Ceramics makes us relaxed, clear our heads and teach us patience. You cannot rush clay. You need to be present and focus your mind on the material in your hands, disconnect from your to-do list, worries about work, and inner conversations. It is a form of meditation. Touching the clay, that feeling that you are again connected with nature in some way. We are living in a world full of technology, surrounded by all this stress and rush, we are losing this contact with nature. The process of taking a clod of mud, mixing it with water giving it form, put it in the fire, and walking away with something beautiful, functional, and completely unique is a magical experience. It brings an overwhelming sense of joy and satisfaction to anyone who works with clay.

ABOUT US

Our relationship with clay began a long time ago, and both of us have a very similar story about how we started. Maybe since we were kids when we used to play with playdough or in school where our most favourite subject was art classes, or maybe later when we went to art school in Bohemia (Czech Republic).

MOSMAN

My parents always wanted me to study something else-something that would give me financial security. So I went to study the economy and business. I finished school and then spent fifteen years in the fashion industry. It was an interesting experience, I designed some bags and hats, but mostly I felt like the middle person between the producer and the customer. I always aspire to make something by myself with my hands to create something original and durable. Later on in my life, it got very busy due to my family and kids, leaving me with no time to do what I wanted to do. We moved with my family to my husband’s country, Australia, and I started a new life and a new job on the Northern beaches of Sydney. Then I met Misha and we shared our dreams and decided that we have to do something about it.

MISHA

Growing up in the Czech Republic back then Czechoslovakia ruled by communism in family that was under constant surveillance. Nobody was allowed to express themselves especially in art form. I consider myself very lucky as I was growing up in an artistic community based around animated movies, as my father was a teacher at a local movie school teaching techniques of clay used in animation. I spent many days at the movie set watching artists making clay alive. Since then I love clay and everything around it like glazes , technique, plasticity. After the fall of communism I moved to London and later to Australia/Sydney/Northern beaches. It was so nice to meet Yvonka and attend school of ceramics with her.
